The home kit the government's Prepare guidance describes, for a power cut, a boil notice or a few days of disruption: a radio that works without mains or internet, water treatment, a way to carry water, fire, warmth and a day's food that needs no cooking. Six items, one box, and it clears our free-delivery line.
What's in it
- Midland ER300 Pro emergency radio. FM and medium wave, with a hand crank, solar panel and USB-C, and a 10,000mAh battery that charges a phone. Tune it to your BBC local station, which is the official channel for local emergency information, and write the frequency on the radio. Our radio guide explains why FM is the band that matters in the UK.
- Water purification tablets (50). Treat tap or stored water if the supply is in doubt. One tablet treats a litre.
- 10 litre collapsible jerry can. Fill it when a warning comes, fold it flat the rest of the time.
- Wind and waterproof matches. For a camping stove or a candle when the lighter's gone.
- Foil space blanket. Warmth without power, and it weighs nothing.
- Seven Oceans emergency ration block. A day's calories that needs no cooking and keeps for years.
What it covers from the government's list
Information, water, warmth and no-cook food: four of the lines on the Prepare list, and the radio is the one almost every home is missing. Our emergency kit checklist has the whole list, sorted into what you probably own already, so you only buy the gaps.
What it doesn't include, on purpose
- Water itself. Tablets treat water that exists. Store a few big bottles from the supermarket first; the guidance works on 2.5 to 3 litres per person per day.
- A torch. The ER300 Pro has a built-in torch and the guidance says one per person, so add a headlamp for each of the others.
- First aid. Check what you have against the list; most homes have the plasters and need the dressings.
- Batteries, hand sanitiser, wet wipes. Any supermarket, cheaper than us.
Who it's for
A household that wants the basics sorted in one go. If you already own a radio, the power cut basics kit is the same box without it.
Bought separately, the six items come to £96.85 today. Not sure whether you need it? Email us what you already have and we'll say what's missing. We reply within 24 hours.
