Which mask?

• MIRA Safety CM-6M: one universal size, with a drinking system and a filter port on each side, so the filter can go left or right. Sold without a filter.
• MIRA Safety CM-7M: comes in three sizes for a closer fit, with a drinking system and the filter on either side.
• MIRA Safety CM-8M: one universal size with a wider field of view, a drinking system and a canteen. Sold without a filter. MIRA doesn't recommend it for heads noticeably smaller or larger than average.
• MIRA Safety MD-1 Kids: MIRA sizes it as medium for ages 2 to 6 and large for 6 to 12. A hose lets the filter sit in a pouch rather than on a child's face, and it takes the same 40mm filters as the adult masks.

Choosing a filter

All our masks use the standard 40mm NATO thread. For most people, one combined CBRN filter covers it: the NBC-77 SOF handles gases, vapours and particles, with a 20-year shelf life while sealed. The ParticleMax P3 is a lighter filter for germs and dust only. See our gas mask filters, and keep at least two per mask.

Fit, practice and limits

• Seal: a mask seals against skin, so facial hair where the mask sits lets air in. If you have a beard, plan to shave when you'd need the mask.
• Check it every time: cover the filter inlet with your palm and breathe in gently. The mask should pull against your face and stay there.
• Practise: wear it at home for ten minutes on a quiet afternoon, so it isn't new on the day.
• Oxygen: a filter cleans air, it doesn't make it. MIRA says its masks are only for air with at least 19.5% oxygen.
• Skin: a mask protects your breathing only. For chemicals that act through the skin, add a hazmat suit, gloves and overboots.
