Survival & Bushcraft Machetes

For bushcraft, camping and clearing overgrown ground, a good machete is one of the most useful tools you can own. Most people buying one here are clearing brambles in the garden or heading into the woods, and we stock proven working patterns for both from Martindale and Condor: the British Army golok, parangs for thick growth and kukris for chopping. Every blade is age-restricted, so the courier checks ID on delivery (18+). Our machete buying guide compares the patterns, or ask us which suits your job.

Choosing a machete

The right blade depends on what you're cutting:

  • Brambles, bracken and overgrown gardens: a parang. Its angled blade slices through springy green growth instead of bouncing off it.
  • A bit of everything: a golok, like the Martindale British Army golok. Heavy towards the tip for chopping, and quick to sharpen with a file.
  • Chopping wood: a kukri. The weight sits ahead of your hand, so it bites deep, though it's a chopper first and a clearing tool second.
  • A small pack: a shorter blade such as the Martindale Paratrooper or the Condor Pack Golok.

Blade length, steel and sheath

For most UK jobs, 10 to 14 inches of blade is about right: enough reach for clearing, enough control for finer work. Carbon steel is tough and easy to sharpen, but it rusts if you leave it wet, so wipe and oil it after use. Stainless resists rust but is harder to bring back to sharp. A good sheath makes a machete safe to carry and store, so check the listing for one.

Buying a machete in the UK

Machetes are legal to buy and own if you're 18 or over. Everything in our range is a working tool, not one of the "zombie-style" designs banned in 2024. Carrying one in public needs a good reason, such as travelling to land you have permission to work on, and it should go sheathed and packed away. This isn't legal advice: if you're unsure, check GOV.UK or ask your local police force.
