The six small things on the government's emergency list that most homes don't have, in one box: light, water treatment, a way to carry water, fire, warmth and a day's food that needs no cooking. It covers a power cut, a boil notice or a few days of disruption at home, and it costs less than buying the pieces one at a time.
What's in it
- Predator II headlamp. Hands-free light. The guidance says a torch per person and that torches are safer than candles; this is the one we'd pick.
- Water purification tablets (50). Treat tap or stored water if the supply is in doubt. One tablet treats a litre.
- 10 litre collapsible jerry can. Fill it when a warning comes, fold it flat the rest of the time.
- Wind and waterproof matches. For a camping stove or a candle when the lighter's gone.
- Foil space blanket. Warmth without power, and it weighs nothing.
- Seven Oceans emergency ration block. A day's calories that needs no cooking and keeps for years.
What it covers from the government's list
The Prepare guidance asks every household to keep a torch, water, a way to stay warm, food that needs no cooking and the basics for a few days. This kit is those lines. Our emergency kit checklist has the whole list, sorted into what you probably own already.
What it doesn't include, on purpose
- Water itself. Tablets treat water that exists. Store a few big bottles from the supermarket first.
- A radio. The Midland ER300 Pro is the one we'd add; the three-day kit with radio includes it.
- First aid. Check what you have against the list; most homes have the plasters and need the dressings.
- Batteries, hand sanitiser, wet wipes. Any supermarket, cheaper than us. The headlamp takes AAA batteries.
Who it's for
A household starting from nothing, or a second set for the car. If you already have a torch, a stove, a jerry can and a blanket, buy the tablets and the ration block singly instead; we'd rather you didn't pay for things you own.
Bought separately, the six items come to £34.30 today. Not sure whether you need it? Email us what you already have and we'll say what's missing. We reply within 24 hours.
