Tins, pouches or ration blocks?

• Tins (Fuel Your Preparation): up to 25 years' shelf life, steel that mice can't get through, and several servings in each, so they suit a home supply.
• Pouches (Summit To Eat): one meal each and light enough for a grab bag or a day out, with a shelf life of up to 7 years.
• Ration blocks: eaten as they are, with no water or cooking, and compact enough to keep in a bag or the car. The Seven Oceans block gives 2,500 kcal per 500g pack and keeps for at least 5 years.

The tins and pouches are the same freeze-dried meals from the same maker, so you're choosing the packaging, not the recipe. Add hot water and wait a few minutes; cold water works too, just more slowly. Both are made in the UK.

How much do you need?

Count meals, not months. Our supplies are sized at one main meal a day: the 1 Month Supply is about six weeks of main meals for one person, and the 12-month supply is 48 tins, a year of main meals for one person or about three months for a family of four. Keep them alongside the everyday food you already have.

A good place to start is a few days: the 72-hour kit covers one person for three days at roughly 2,000 kcal a day. Build a month of tins from there, then more if you want it.
