MIRA Safety MD-2 Child Escape Respirator with PAPR (Hood, Ages 2+)

A powered escape hood for children from about age 2 to small teens, supplied with a genuine NBC filter.

SUMMARY

The MIRA MD-2 is a child escape respirator built around a four-layer hood instead of a tight-fitting mask. A battery-powered blower pushes about 45 litres of filtered air a minute through an NBC filter and into the hood, keeping positive pressure inside and taking the effort out of breathing. MIRA designed it to avoid the fit and breathing problems a standard full-face mask can have on a small face. Made in Israel.

DETAILS

• Powered airflow: About 45 litres of filtered air a minute (MIRA's figure), with up to 15 hours of continuous runtime on four CR123 batteries.

• NBC filter included: It arrives as a complete system with a sealed, genuine NBC filter, so you are not left hunting for a compatible filter. The connection is the standard 40mm NATO thread.

• No mask seal to get right: The hood slips over the head in seconds. MIRA's design removes the facial seal and the strap system that make adult-style masks hard to fit quickly on a child.

• Four-layer hood: A PVC, nylon, nylon, PVC laminate made for visibility and to resist tearing and chemical permeation. MIRA's specification is aerosol penetration of no more than 0.02%, and the hood material is tested for up to 240 minutes against mustard agent permeation.

• Built-in drinking system: A child can drink without taking the hood off, which helps if it has to be worn for longer.

• Fits approximately ages 2 to small teens: That is MIRA's description of the range. If your child is near the top of it, or you are unsure, ask us before you buy.

• Compact to store: Stays in its storage case, ready to keep in a car, a kit bag or a cupboard near your shelter space.

• Made in Israel: Manufactured to a specification that includes 100% production testing of critical components for leaks, airflow and visual condition (MIRA).

HOW IT'S PACKED

Complete system with hood, blower, tubing, drinking system, carrying options and NBC filter, in its storage case. Shipping weight about 3.5kg.

Why Choose the MD-2?

A negative-pressure mask only works for a child who can breathe through the filter and hold a seal. MIRA's advice for the MD-1 children's mask is that the child should be able to blow up a balloon on their own, and it recommends a powered unit alongside it. The MD-2 is the powered answer for younger children, or any child who struggles with a mask.

Like any filter-based respirator, it cannot make air breathable where oxygen is low, and it is meant for escape and shelter use. Read MIRA's instructions before you rely on it, and practise putting it on with your child so it is no surprise on the day.
