A hand-crank radio for the news and a 20,000mAh power bank for everything else: the two things that keep a household informed and in touch through a long power cut. The Midland ER100 gives you FM and AM with nothing to plug in, and the Nitecore NB20000 Gen 3 charges a phone several times over, then recharges the radio by USB when the crank gets old.
What's in it
- Midland ER100 hand-crank radio. FM and AM with a telescopic aerial, charged by hand crank, solar panel or USB, with a 2,600mAh battery and an LED torch with an SOS mode. Up to 25 hours on a charge. Tune it to your BBC local station, the official channel for local emergency information, and write the frequency on the radio. Our radio guide explains why FM is the band that matters in the UK.
- Nitecore NB20000 Gen 3 power bank. 20,000mAh in a carbon fibre shell at 291g, two USB-C ports that charge two devices at once, pass-through charging and IPX5 against rain. Nitecore's own chart puts it at 3.8 charges of an iPhone 15 Pro. It ships with a USB-C to USB-A adapter and no cable, so use the cable from your phone.
Why a radio and a power bank, not one or the other
In a power cut the mobile network can go within hours, and the radio is how you hear what is happening. The phone is how you reach people once the network is back, and it's the thing most homes run out of first. The ER100 can top a phone up once from its own battery; the NB20000 does it again and again, and keeps the radio going too. Charge the bank every few months and it's ready.
What it doesn't include, on purpose
- A charging cable for the power bank. The radio comes with its own, and the power bank uses the USB-C cable you already have for your phone.
- Light for everyone. The ER100 has a torch built in. The guidance says a torch per person, so add a headlamp for the others.
Bought separately, the two items come to £164.92 today. Not sure which radio or power bank suits you? Email us and we'll say. We reply within 24 hours.
