A plain vegetable stew is the one meal almost everybody will eat. Potato, tomato, mushroom, peas, carrot and onion with basil, oregano and thyme through it, and nothing in it that anyone is likely to object to or react to. When you are feeding a group you did not plan for, that matters more than having something clever on the shelf.

It is also vegan and carries no listed allergens at all, which is unusual in this range. Most long term food stores are built around chicken, beef and pasta dishes, so a household with a vegan, a vegetarian or someone avoiding wheat or dairy can end up with a year of food and very little any of them can eat. This is the tin that covers everyone.

Each of our meals are cooked first, then freeze-dried. This means they are light-weight and easy to store. Our tins in particular are a fantastic way to pack a lot of food into a relatively small area, and at 500g a tin they stack neatly. With a shelf life of 25 years, this means you can always be sure to have a supply of delicious, nutritious meals.

Preparation is simple, which is ideal in an emergency. Take 100g of the dry mix from the tin and bring 250ml of water to the boil. Stir the water through the mix until it is thoroughly combined, cover it, and leave it to stand for 8 to 9 minutes. Stir again, season to taste and serve. One tin gives you five servings.

One practical note worth knowing. This stew is on the salty side, at 3.8g of salt a serving, which is around two thirds of an adult's recommended daily maximum. Salt is not a problem when water is easy to come by, and it is a genuine consideration when it is not, because salty food makes you drink more. If your water is rationed, pair this with a lower salt meal rather than eating it twice in a day.

Orders over £80 qualify for free standard delivery. For orders under £80, a flat £4.95 shipping fee applies.
